The UN considers sports and play as human rights issue and says it should be respected and implemented worldwide. True. Sports cannot be seen as a luxury, but should be seen as an investment to develop healthy, positive and balanced individuals. Making sports a part of youth empowerment program is a powerful way of developing a positive society. Youth is a stage in life marked with great zeal and energy and if tapped properly can lead to phenomenal results. Recognizing this many not-for-profit organizations in the country like Stairs have been pioneers in empowering underprivileged youth through sports. In context with India, which has its 65% population under 35 years of age, sports is indeed and can be a catalyst for positive change. While, the youth of the country has opportunities in abundance to show off their skills and earn a livelihood, there is also a darker picture. Many of the children and youth suffer for performance pressure. As some of them are not able to cope in academics or other reasons like family pressure, poverty, dearth of opportunity etc, they resort to drug abuse as a source of escape or they take a drastic step by ending their lives. In order to bring up more balanced and stable youth it is imperative to introduce them to the world of sports. It is thorough this medium that they will feel confident, worthy and play a part in the nation building process. Poverty is a huge challenge we face as a nation. And half of the countrys youth is living in abject poverty be it in rural or urban areas. To give a hand to these youngsters various youth development programs have been devised by the government and NGOs in India which are also working for the youth empowerment at the grassroots. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) had allocated a budget of Rs. 288 crore for the year 2012-13 for this very objective. Other than that NGOs for Children in India are also focussing on sports activities for social cohesion and as an opportunity for self sustenance for the children. Many youth empowerment and leadership programs of NGOs are have included sports for positive development amongst the underprivileged. Stairs, an NGO in Delhi is an excellent example of how developmental sports turn around lives of the underprivileged youth. The emphasis is on sports as an integral part of the education. The sports facilities created are multi-disciplinary. Its various projects pertaining to sports for development across the country have witnessed phenomenal success. The theme is simple. It encourages the youngsters to .e and play at their various centres and provides them with free infrastructure and facilities.
